Interview: Main composer of Mahoutsukai no Yoru talks about his soundtrack.

How did you come to work on the soundtrack for Mahoutsukai no Yoru?

Fukasawa : Mahoutsukai no Yoru was the first Type-Moon game I worked on. I've worked on several games from other companies before, but I've never had experience with this kind of problem, and I've never dealt with a game with a setting like Mahoutsukai no Yoru. I felt that this task was worthy of a challenge.

Given that Mahoutsukai no Yoru is essentially a visual novel, how much time was spent creating the soundtrack for it?

Fukasawa: Indeed, the game is a visual novel, but I probably didn't understand the impact music had on players at the time. Ten years ago, the PC version of the game didn't have voice acting, so the music should have played an even more important role,

How did Tsukihime and other Type-Moon projects influence this soundtrack?

Fukasawa: Before working on Mahoutsukai no Yoru, I knew there was a game called Fate/stay night and I knew what it was about, but I had never played it myself and I didn't even know it was a Type game -Moon.

When I was assigned to work on Mahoutsukai no Yoru, I thought that if I had a look at their other projects in advance, it might affect my work, so I deliberately avoided them in order to work on a blank canvas. So I don't think other writings have had much influence on this work.

However, I remember that I only listened to one song that Yuki Kajiura composed for Kara no Kyoukai, it was included in some of the materials I received during the making of the music. I should have expected this from the very beginning, but I remember that this track made a deep impression on me. It was absolutely beautiful and I can still sometimes hear bits and pieces of that infectious tune in my head. I don't remember exactly what track it was, but maybe Kajiura's music influenced my work in some way. Now that I have already studied many different works and works, I always strive to approach my work with an open and fresh look.

Which track in Mahoutsukai no Yoru did you spend the most time writing?

Fukasawa: I don't remember which track took the most time. The completion of the entire project, including additional orders, could take the longest amount of time. However, I remember that the main topic took the least amount of time for me. I remember writing a tune that came to my mind right on the spot during the first music production meeting, when we were all introduced to the overall setting of the game, that was a very meaningful moment for me.
